While these alternatives do contain calories and impact blood sugar, they may lack the specific neurological "penalty" associated with synthetic or highly processed sugar alcohols.

While the medical community has received the study with interest, industry groups representing sweetener manufacturers often point to the long history of regulatory approval for these substances. Agencies like the FDA and EFSA (European Food Safety Authority) have maintained that sweeteners like aspartame are safe for human consumption within established daily limits.
